Caribbean Currents: Caribbean Music from Rumba to Reggae, Revised Edition

Oh,... I am sorry, Caribbean Currents: Caribbean Music from Rumba to Reggae.

This book has some good information; especially when Manuel situates the music within a broader socio-cultural background. However, if you want to learn about Puerto Rican music, read cautiously (see Manuel's "everything is Cuban" stance). Much of his information on Puerto Rico's music is wrong.

The fact that scholars have not produced a large, comprehensive series of studies on a culture (PR), although, this of course, is now changing, does not mean an author should blatantly speculate about many aspects of that culture.

Rumba Rules: The Politics of Dance Music in Mobutu’s Zaire

This book does a decent job describing the music scene in present day DR Congo (former Zaire). It especially highlights the hierarchial nature of Congolese bands and the sorry plight of most band members who don't hold the title of band leader (Le President). It also reveals the unusual and intricate relationships between bands and their fans in the Congo

Unfortunately the author is very unconvincing when he delves into how Mobutu's political system helped define the Congolese music.

The footprints are real easy to follow, I dont know why all books dont have them. The words are real clear too. Never thought I would like a dance BOOK! but its better than the video I got.
